ADDICTION

The urban Aboriginal population is growing steadily. In 2001, 49% of the Aboriginal people of Canada lived in cities. This population has unique needs that often are not met by mainstream services.

Too often, addictions and mental health issues in urban Aboriginal communities are left untreated, or are treated in culturally inappropriate ways.

Aboriginal community members in Toronto have long felt that there are large gaps in addictions and mental health services for Toronto Aboriginal people. Native Child and Family Services, along with other community organizations, strives to address these gaps at all levels of the community, across a wide continuum of care.

NCFST works with people with addictions and mental illness through our Toronto Aboriginal Care Team, as well as through other community programs that are part of the Aboriginal Addiction Services Network.
